Greek merchant shipping
The UGS

The collective voice of Greek shipping.

Founded in 1916, the Union of Greek Shipowners represents the owners of Greek-flagged and Greek-controlled ocean-going vessels — safeguarding the interests of the world's largest merchant fleet.

Identity

Who we are

The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) is the institutional body representing Greek shipowners of ocean-going vessels. Headquartered in Piraeus, we work with Greek, European and international authorities on the policy, regulatory and operational framework that shapes international shipping.

Our members operate the world's largest merchant fleet — approximately 19% of global tonnage and 61% of the EU-controlled fleet — carrying the energy, food and raw materials that sustain the global economy.

History

A century at sea

Established in 1916 in Piraeus, UGS emerged from the deep maritime tradition of the Greek islands and coastal communities. Through two world wars, the rebuilding of the post-war fleet, and every technological and regulatory transformation since, UGS has stood as the collective voice of Greek shipping.

The Union's story mirrors that of modern Greek shipping itself: a story of resilience, entrepreneurship and continuous investment in ships, people and know-how.
